Industry Spotlight: Massroots April 15, 2015
Welcome to our first installment of ‘Industry Spotlight,’ a weekly series highlighting current events, interviews, and multimedia content related to the budding cannabis industry. This week we have some big news from our friends at MassRoots, one of the largest and most active social networks for cannabis consumers.
For those of you who are unfamiliar, MassRoots is a semi-anonymous social networking app for cannabis enthusiast around the globe. The app, which is available for iOS and Android, allows users to create and share cannabis related content on an Instagram-style platform. We are excited about the connectivity MassRoots provides the cannabis community, especially in light of the recent mass-deletion of hundreds of cannabis related Instagram accounts (many of which were legitimate businesses).
Despite its partial legalization, cannabis related content has received pushback from certain social media platforms and app stores. Simply allowing the customers to download MassRoots from Apple’s App Store was no easy task. In November 2014, Apple removed Massroots from the App Store under the pretext that it violated the company’s anti-drug policy. Following the petition efforts of the MassRoots team and the cannabis community, Apple reversed its decision and permitted cannabis related apps (including MassRoots) to be downloaded in the app store within the 23 states that have legalized medical cannabis. We applaud the activism efforts of the cannabis community, which resulted in over 10,000 emails being sent to Apple.
As indicated by Apple’s decision reversal, our community is gaining a national voice that is spearheaded by entities like MassRoots, which are passionate about ending prohibition. Originally conceived roughly two years ago in a college apartment, MassRoots has enjoyed waves of exponential growth. Since January 2014, MassRoots has grown from 20,000 to 275,000 cannabis consumers and facilitated over 75 million user interactions. We had the pleasure of meeting members of the MassRoots team this past week in their Denver headquarters. They are currently working to incorporate additional features that will enhance user experience and business presence on the platform.
We congratulate MassRoots, who recently secured the first initial public offering for any company with ties to the cannabis industry on April 9, 2015. “Our whole thing is community, and opening the cannabis movement to the public marketplace is a huge step forward,” said Stewart Fortier, MassRoots’ chief technology officer and co-founder. “We see a public offering as crowdfunding in the highest form — only accredited investors can get involved with these companies and that gives you the viability you need to keep growing.” Follow Black Rock on Massroots here.
